Sherman is the eldest Holmes Brother and vocalist, bassist, and pianist, has continued the Holmes Brothers’ tradition of giving of his musical and spiritual talents; and exploring the musical landscape. Sherman was born near Christchurch Virginia and his schoolteacher parents fostered he and his late brother Wendell’s early interest in music with Baptist hymns and spirituals as well as the blues. Sherman studied clarinet, piano, and and music theory at Virginia State University before taking up the bass. The rich history of the Holmes Brothers began in 1979 and ended in 2015. Sherman shared in the winning of the Blues Foundation’s Band of the Year (’05) and Album of the Year (’08) as well as a NEA National Heritage Fellowship (’14), the highest honor the US bestows on folk artists.
